Homeopathy for Labour

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

I absolutely love supporting women during pregnancy, labour and postpartum.

It's actually one of the ways in which I first got into homeopathy, as I found my Helios childbirth kit was invaluable during my gentle homebirth with my second child.

Homeopathy works on physical, emotional and mental symptoms, and such can be a fantastic support during childbirth. Some of my favourite remedies that I have personally used and prescribed for my patients are :

Arnica

Bruised, sore and aching due to physical exertion and straining. Reduces swelling. You might not want people to touch you or come near you. (Also use postpartum for healing)

Caulophyllum

Used to strengthen and tone the uterus and prepare the cervix prior to birth. It can also help with dilation and strengthening contractions/surges.

Kali Carb

Useful when babies are in a posterior position, or back to back. There can be a lot of back pain, irritability and a desire for firm pressure on the back.

Cimicifuga

Cervix spasms and becomes rigid on examination. Uterus ascends high into the abdomen during contraction. Pains fly from side to side of the abdomen. Irregular but painful contractions.

Pulsatilla

Changeable and erratic contractions that are not progressing. The mother feels weepy, wanting support and comfort. Better for fresh air and thirstless. The baby might not be in an ideal position.

Chamomilla

Irritable, thirsty. Intolerant of pain. Spasmodic pain, pressing upwards.

Kali Phos

Useful for delayed labour, where the contractions are weak or seemingly ineffective. There can be worry and weakness.

Gelsemium

Rigid os- not dilating. The mother feels better for urination, which is frequent with chilliness. There is weakness, quivering, anxiety and pain in the back.
